Using Thai nominees, also known as sponsors, to skirt Thai law and purchase land or own a business as a foreigner in the Southeast Asian nation has become increasingly popular in recent years.

But just because it is a widely used loophole to get around existing Thai laws prohibiting foreign ownership of land without going through the proper channels, it doesn’t mean it is advisable–or legal.

In fact, a major Thai law firm recently had four of their offices raided across Thailand for helping foreigners purchase land using Thai nominees.

As a result, the firm was fined 2 billion baht.
